Ujjayi breath is a technique that helps us to control the length of breath.
It is an exaggeration of the sound of the breath which creates a slight constriction in the throat and nasal passages.
It sounds like a soft snore! Not only does it help with our control over the length and depth of our breath, but because it is audible it gives us an anchor point for our mind, helping to create a mindful practice.
The third benefit is thought to be vagal nerve stimulation - the vagal nerve being part of the nervous system responsible for countering the flight or fight response.
As the vagal nerve passes close to our throat the vibration that the ujjayi breath creates is thought to stimulate it, helping to create a sense of calm.
