Santosha is a yogic principle that translates to contentment – satisfaction with what we have internally and externally. Our sense of self is not aligned with acquiring more and more, but with being grateful for what we have now. It’s not about not having goals, these are important and give us direction.
It’s about not attaching our self-worth to those external accomplishments and embodying the knowing that who we are inherently is enough 😌
On the mat, it’s about accepting our physicality and where it is now. Accepting how far it has come and looking forward to whatever the future will bring, without forcing our bodies into postures it is not yet ready for. With force comes contraction, as the body protects itself from injury and the further we push ourselves away from where we are trying to go. When we let go of the ‘need’ to be more flexible, stronger or balanced it comes to find us naturally through practice.
You can take this into your everyday life by noticing moments when you feel negative about yourself based on external situations. What might it feel like if you didn’t attach your self-worth to external goals and accolades? How does this affect your levels of stress and anxiety?
