As humans we tend to grasp onto positive emotions, like excitement, joy, love or gratitude but any emotions we don’t enjoy like anxiety, fear, sadness or anger we often avert away from by keeping ourselves busy or perhaps drinking alcohol. The thing is it’s often the avoidance or the fear of facing the emotion that creates the most amount suffering. The longer we ignore or suppress our feelings the more powerful they become.
Witnessing emotions with none reactivity is a skill we can learn through this practice. We use this technique to allow emotions we have averted away from and perhaps buried to be felt so they can be processed. We can also learn to feel our emotions without reacting to them.
